Border Crossers ā by Chico MacMurtrie (2021)
I chose this as one of the two projects for my blog because of the subject location was interesting to me. Growing up in Southern Arizona less than 60 miles away from Sonora, Mexico (the border). MacMurtrie created a pair of inflatable arches that would activate on each side of the border at the same time. The purpose of this project was community-based and intended to be a peaceful and celebratory event. I thought watching the arches inflate was whimsy, and especially watching participants gather at the end of the activation.
Chordal Distance ā by Sylvan Zheng and Young-Min Choi (2019)
The second project that interested me, was Chordal Distance by Sylvan Zheng and Young-Min Choi. Sound would emit when opposing ends of the chord/rope was pulled by the artists. It was interesting to me, because the sound that was emitted was peaceful tones. Iām not sure how to describe it, but it was soothing for me to listen. I believe there must because some type of pressure or force sensor, because the artists are pulling the rope. Not fiercely, but there is tension, and no slack in the rope.
Are there any conceptual or technical threads that resonate with your own interests or goals for this class?
Both projects interested me because as I explore my practice in making and designing. I feel drawn to create whimsy and playfulness elements in my work.
