Explore the categories and choose ONE of the artists mentioned in one of the categories Do a bit of research on their body of work to identify one of their projects of interest. It could be a project mentioned in the reading or one you discover elsewhere, but you should find it compelling and interesting to “re-create” but with your own aesthetic. Describe the artist, the project they did and how you might re-create it today. Would your work also be categorized the same? If possible, include an image of the original project in your post. Your post should be in the range of 200 - 400 words.
In the reading (Aesthetics of Interaction in Digital Art) by Katja Kwastek, on Page 12 (technically Page 30 in the PDF), there was the mention of Frieder Nake and Georg Ness, who were mathematiciations exploring generative aesthetics (a theory from Max Bense) in the 1960s. I focused on Frieder Nake, because as I looked up some of his work, it was funny (well not funny like hilarious) but that an error I ran into in my Creative Coding Self-Portrait 2.0 HW assignment ↗ that I produced in p5.js looked so similar to the works by Frieder Nake. Well maybe I shouldn’t be so surprised, p5.js is a tool that creates generative art.
The error I had in p5.js was when I was testing the function: square()
In the Creative Coding Class, there was an example ↗ that Carrie was walking us through: but for some reason when I was testing it in my own code for my HW assignment. The squares were not disappearing, and left a trail of squares (I still need to meet with Carrie to figure out why what happen, but I included my code in the blog post)
It is funny, because I actually named this file/screenshot as “Square Distortion-CC” in my files.
A work from Frieder Nake that I found similar to my own error that I produced was, called “Walk-Through Raster”or “Untitled” produced in 1972, that I saw in a Medium Article (AB 101: Historical Figures in Generative Art — Frieder Nake ↗) by Druid on January 2022. I think there are definitely similarities because of square patterns repetitively, and overlay on each other.
I think if I considered the error that I produced in p5.js as a “work” , then, I would considered it would be categorized the same as “computer generated art” in the field and works of Frieder Nake. I make that distinction because I was not intending for the squares to create a trail, over my self-portrait. I was intending for the squares to dissaspear. Nevertheless, I am happy that documented the error (to ask Carrie for the Creative Coding class), but also for myself because it relates to the reading!
