I think it is interesting how Clark compares himself “becoming more and more a cyborg” due to his reliance of technological devices. He recalling a memory during Christmas, how his “young” coworker was so engrossed in texting (to his partner) on his Nokia phone, that he was half present to the people who was actually present around him. I don’t necessary agree that society (or as humans) our reliance of technology make us cyborgs.
However there are content creators/YouTube Short sketch people who make comedic/commentary videos how people’s overreliance on using large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to even hold the most minuscule conversations (ex. responding to a job application, first date opening messages, responding to a simple: “How are you” question). I guess my view of society and its relationships to technology is more aligned to the dead internet theory, and more AI Slop responding to AI Slop (on places like reddit) not really that humans are becoming more cyborg like (the term cyborg seems more.. advanced?)
I do think HYPER-REALITY (2016) video by Matsuda is a little bit representative of technology reality of today. The mario cart-esque overlays on the traffic lanes (in the video), reminded me when you watch live sports on TV, the ads are imposed over the barriers/structures and move. However attending a sports game in person, the ads on the barriers/structures were static and non-moving. It shocked me because I thought that in some stadiums had LED panels that had moving advertisements.
